Ozeki is the second-highest rank in sumo and the first truly prestigious rank below Yokozuna. Unlike lower ranks, Ozeki promotion and demotion follow specific rules that make it both an achievement and a responsibility.
The traditional benchmark for Ozeki promotion is accumulating approximately 33 wins over three consecutive tournaments while ranked in the san'yaku (upper ranks). However, this is a guideline, not an absolute rule — exceptional tournament victories, particularly yusho (tournament championships), can accelerate promotion.
Aonishiki's record-breaking promotion in late 2025 is instructive: he won the Kyushu tournament in November 2025 while ranked Sekiwake after just 13 tournaments in the top division — the fastest rise in modern sumo history. His exceptional record made the extraordinary promotion decision straightforward.
Once promoted to Ozeki, a wrestler must maintain the rank by achieving a kachi-koshi (8+ wins) in each tournament. Failing twice in succession results in demotion to Sekiwake, though an Ozeki can regain their rank with 10+ wins in the immediate next tournament.
