Призові кошти турнірів сумо

Скільки борці заробляють на турнірі — чемпіонські призи, конверти кеншо та спеціальні нагороди.

Sumo tournament prize money comes from multiple sources and can be substantial for top performers.

Championship prizes: The winner of a Makuuchi tournament receives approximately ¥10 million (~$67,000) plus the prestigious Emperor's Cup. The runner-up and other top finishers receive smaller prizes.

Special prizes (sansho): Three special prizes are awarded each tournament: the Shukun-sho (Outstanding Performance), Kanto-sho (Fighting Spirit), and Gino-sho (Technique). Each carries ¥2 million.

Kensho envelopes: Corporate sponsors pay to have their name announced before high-profile bouts. The wrestler who wins the bout receives these envelopes — ¥62,000 per envelope (after the JSA takes a portion for retirement funds). A marquee bout between two Yokozuna might have 60-80 envelopes, worth over ¥4 million to the winner in one match. In January 2026, a record 3,469 kensho envelopes were registered for the tournament.

Total earnings: A Yokozuna who wins a tournament, earns kensho on their bouts, and receives special prizes can realistically earn ¥30-50 million from a single tournament beyond their regular salary.
